Eye Care
Eye health includes the retina, the macula, the lens, the clear membrane that lines the eye, and pressure within
the eyeball. The following conditions are related to eye care.
Allergies are responses mounted by the immune system
to a particular food, inhalant (airborne substance), or chemical. In popular terminology, the terms
“allergies” and “sensitivities” are often used to mean the same thing, although many sensitivities are not
true allergies. The term “sensitivity” is general and may include true allergies, reactions that do not affect
the immune system (and therefore are not technically allergies), and reactions for which the cause has yet to
be determined. Check out Lens.com to find the lowest prices on the Web for Focus Night & Day Lenses.

Some non-allergic types of sensitivity are called intolerances and may be caused by toxins, enzyme inadequacies,
drug-like chemical reactions, psychological associations, and other mechanisms.

Cataract
is a cloudiness in the lens of the eye caused by damage to the protein of the lens. This damage impairs
vision. Most people who live long enough will develop cataracts. Cataracts are more likely to occur in those
who smoke, have diabetes, or are exposed to excessive sunlight. All of these factors lead to oxidative
damage. Oxidative damage to the lens of the eye appears to cause cataracts in animals and people.
People with diabetes cannot properly process glucose, a sugar the body uses for energy. As a result, glucose
stays in the blood, causing blood glucose to rise. At the same time, however, the cells of the body can be starved
for glucose. Diabetes can lead to poor wound healing, higher risk of infections, and many other problems involving
the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart.
The term glaucoma describes a group of eye conditions that are usually associated with increased intraocular
pressure (pressure within the eyeball). In many cases, the cause of glaucoma is unknown. Conventional medications
are frequently effective in reducing intraocular pressure. Therefore, it is important for people with glaucoma to
be under the care of an ophthalmologist. People
with night blindness (also called impaired dark adaptation) see poorly in the darkness but see normally when
adequate amounts of light are present. The condition does not actually involve true blindness, even at night.
Macular degeneration is the degeneration of the macula retinae, also called the macula
lutea, an oval disc on the retina in the back of the eye. Degeneration of the macula retinae is the leading
cause of blindness in elderly Americans.

Many factors can affect our vision, which is also a target for such conditions as cataracts
and glaucoma. But age related macular degeneration, the leading causes of blindness for seniors, holds the biggest
threat. However, recent studies have shown that specific supplement combinations may be effective at reducing and
even reversing this condition.
As we age, our vision suffers from exposure to natural and unnatural elements in our environment, such as bright
light, free radicals, first and second hand smoke. It is also affected by our genetic disposition for eyesight.
Many of the diseases associated with deteriorating vision are age-related. They include macular degeneration,
cataracts, retinopathy and glaucoma, to name a few.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) effects approximately 13 million people in this country and is a primary
cause of new blindness for Americans over the age of 65. Macular degeneration is a disease which affects the
retina, gradually causing vision loss. A breakdown between the retina and the choroids results in degeneration.
The first symptom of macular degeneration is usually blurred central vision or a large central blind spot. There is
no cure, but laser surgery during the early stages of the disease may slow its progression. Risk factors for
macular degeneration include advancing age along with genetic predispositions, arteriosclerosis, hypertension and
smoking.
